R&D Business Data Expert – DSAI
Position Purpose
The R&D Business Data Expert will drive insight generation and business process optimization across R&D by ensuring that internally generated and externally sourced data are FAIR+Q (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable, and of Quality).
This is accomplished through the development and implementation of key data capabilities:
Business Information Modeling: Connecting and defining data across domains
Business Data Architecture: Mapping and optimizing data flows across business processes and systems
Reference Data Capability: Establishing and governing standards used in models and workflows
Data Catalog: Providing a centralized resource to discover data assets, data models, and governance information
The role is responsible for the vision and delivery of Business Information Modeling and Business Data Architecture, working closely with teams managing Reference Data Standards and the Data Catalog. The primary domain focus is R&D, initially concentrating on Research and Preclinical areas.
Your Tasks and Responsibilities
Business Information Modeling
Develop and evolve conceptual, logical, and physical data models (relational, graph-based, and others) that balance design flexibility with standardization, scalability, and user needs
Ensure models support emerging scientific approaches, data types, AI/ML use cases, and comply with regulatory standards (FDA 21 CFR Part 11, ICH GCP, GxP)
Ensure metadata capture for R&D data assets aligned to data models
Own the capability roadmap, rollout strategy (resourcing, budgeting, delivery), communication, and adoption metrics for information modeling
Business Data Architecture
Define the vision and methodology for documenting data flows for priority use cases
Map data flow from production to consumption across R&D business processes and systems, including attributes, formats, transformations, standards, user groups, and system interactions
Scale methodology across additional use cases to maintain a “living document” of R&D data flows
Own the roadmap, rollout, communication, and adoption plan for the data architecture capability
Reference Data Standards & Data Catalog
Partner closely with teams managing reference data standards, metadata, and the data catalog
Align modeling and architecture with governance frameworks to ensure seamless operational coordination
Strategic Leadership
Influence without authority and collaborate in a flat-hierarchy environment
Advocate for data capability adoption across diverse R&D functions
Co-shape DSAI’s data and data science strategy
Working Relations
You will collaborate with:
Data producers, consumers, owners, and stewards across Research Biology, Translational Science, Drug Discovery, Preclinical Research, CMC/Pharmaceutical Sciences, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, etc.
Lab and computational scientists, clinicians, statisticians, regulatory professionals
Data architects, engineers, UX/UI engineers, technology/platform teams
External vendors, contractors, and industry forums/consortia
Who You Are
MS in Biological Sciences, Informatics, or Computer Science (biomedical context)
15+ years of experience in data modeling (relational, object-oriented, graph-based), architecture, metadata management, and controlled vocabularies for biomedical domains
Deep understanding of R&D, especially early-stage and modern quantitative methods
Strong expertise in data governance, data quality management, data catalogs, data science, DevOps, and cloud-native environments (e.g., AWS, Databricks)
Proven track record delivering impactful data products and solutions for Pharma R&D, from vision to execution
Independent, collaborative, detail-oriented; strong project management skills; able to influence across stakeholder groups and manage ambiguity
Strategic thinker with excellent communication and learning agility
Excellent English communication skills; German proficiency (written and verbal) is preferred
